Longtime Wilmington-area health care advocates Dr. Martin Meyerson and Deborah Meyerson '94, '01M have made a $500,000 gift to establish the Martin B. Meyerson, MD and Deborah J. Meyerson Endowed Trust Fund at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The fund will support a variety of initiatives within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). Their gift is part of Like No Other: The Campaign for UNCW, that has received more than $80 million in support to date.

“We are motivated to support Dean (Charles) Hardy and his vision for CHHS because we care about health care in this region, and we know that means an investment in higher education, research and innovation initiatives, and health care workforce development,” says Martin Meyerson, a retired Wilmington-area radiation oncologist who currently volunteers as a physician at a community clinic.
A significant portion of the gift will support the School of Nursing, of which Deborah Meyerson – who enjoyed a long career as a nurse practitioner – is a two-time alumna. The fund will support need-based scholarships in the school and the newly established Mrs. Deborah J. Meyerson Award of Excellence for Family Nurse Practitioners which will recognize an outstanding student in the Family Nurse Practitioner program, among other priorities.
The Meyerson Endowed Trust Fund will also provide resources to build a strong pipeline of local health care talent and drive cutting-edge research to help improve the quality of health care in the region. A portion of the gift will go toward programs that connect middle and high school students with higher education health care programs. Another portion will facilitate research and innovation efforts championed by CHHS faculty, particularly those pursuing federal grants. In honor of the Meyersons’ support of these initiatives, the CHHS Office of Research and Innovation will be renamed in their honor.
