Dr. Peter Jacobson’s deep-seated belief in the power of guidance and generosity fuels his ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals through UNCW’s Pre-Health Programs. When reflecting on the arc of his career in medicine, from his days as a Princeton undergraduate to his clinical professorship at the UNC School of Medicine, one thing shines through: mentorship.
Jacobson, clinical professor of neurology at UNC Chapel Hill and adjunct professor at UNCW’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), is far more than a generous donor. He is an advocate, a mentor and an active participant in the growth of pre-health students at UNCW.
Jacobson completed a rigorous academic journey, graduating with highest honors from Princeton University and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, followed by additional training at institutions such as the Mayo Clinic. He knows firsthand what it takes to succeed in medicine — but the path wasn’t always easy.
What made the difference, he says, was encouragement — the kind of mentorship that lifts someone’s belief in themselves.
“Each step of the way, someone kind, smart, and generous with their time helped me believe I could do it,” said Jacobson. “It’s now my obligation to pass that kindness forward.”
Jacobson plays an active role in strengthening UNCW’s Pre-Health Programs and supporting students pursuing careers in healthcare. He participates directly in student mentorship, offers guest lectures and provides advice on programming to meet real-world needs. His financial contributions also help sustain and expand resources for pre-health students.
"Dr. Jacobson is the kind of person who always answers the call," said College of Health & Human Services Dean Jack Watson. "His talks are always engaging and inspiring — he always has a line of students eager to speak with him afterward."
Jacobson’s guidance leaves a lasting impact on students’ paths well beyond graduation. Several of his former mentees have gone on to medical school — some overcoming significant personal challenges along the way. Jacobson says seeing their success is among the most rewarding aspects of his work with UNCW.
“I feel incredibly blessed to have met Dr. Jacobson, who has been an essential mentor not only in my own journey but also in the journeys of many students striving to enter the medical field,” said Isaac Morales Gomez ’26, a first-generation college student completing the pre-clinical concentration in public health as a pathway to medical school. Gomez initially connected with Jacobson at the “Pre-Med Admissions Tips” event hosted by Pre-Health Programs and has attended numerous pre-health events since then.
“Dr. Jacobson's genuine passion for uplifting others truly stands out and his encouragement and support profoundly impact everyone he meets. I’m deeply grateful for every conversation I’ve had with him and for the invaluable guidance he has generously shared,” said Gomez.
Stories like Gomez’s demonstrate how Jacobson’s mentorship continues to shape individual futures in profound and lasting ways.
“Dr. Jacobson’s generosity is matched by his deep commitment to student success,” says Sheri N. Leavens, assistant dean for student success and academic advising. “Whether through guest lectures, mentorship or strategic investments in student opportunities, he consistently opens doors, helping students see what’s possible and guiding them toward it. His wisdom, presence and belief in their potential continue to create lasting ripple effects across CHHS and the broader campus community.”
For Jacobson, his commitment runs deeper than education alone. “To me, this isn’t just about education. It’s about service,” he said. “Helping people achieve their dreams in healthcare feeds the soul, it feeds the profession and it benefits entire communities.”
With Jacobson’s support, UNCW’s Pre-Health Programs continue to grow into one of the region’s top launchpads for students entering healthcare careers. His hands-on mentorship and financial support have created a learning environment that doesn’t just prepare students for entrance exams and applications but inspires them to lead with compassion and confidence.
