Hawk's Eye View: Sydney Johnson '23

“Wilmington is known for being a popular location for filming both movies and TV shows. There have been a lot of productions filmed here. That’s part of what makes the program here so special. Us as students, we are in the middle of that. With that comes a lot of opportunities.”

The student experience is paramount in a UNCW education. Programs like no other are key to a Seahawk’s educational journey. The UNCW Film Studies department teaches students to understand the history, aesthetics, business and social significance of motion pictures and provides practical training in artistic and technical aspects of filmmaking.

In this latest Hawk’s Eye View, Sydney Johnson '23 gives an in-depth look at the life of a film studies student through her self-produced vlog.

“Within this program, we have the opportunity to step out of the box and focus on things that are not as traditional. There’s that support to branch out and discover new things,” shares Sydney.

“This area is, I think, the perfect location for students to be, not only to learn from the professors, but then go out in the area and learn from those within the industry currently. There is a community outside of the school that supports filmmaking and is so active in filmmaking.”
