Embracing the Seahawk spirit of Family Weekend, University Advancement and campus partners welcomed alumni and parents to campus in celebration of the significant impact volunteering and philanthropy make on the UNCW student experience.
Kicking off the first meetings of the 2024-25 academic year for both the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Parents Council, the weekend emphasized the importance of giving back and provided alumni, parents and families the opportunity to meet and hear from campus leadership about the invaluable support of volunteers and donors who have provided the foundation for the student experience of today - as well as the vital need for support moving forward to enhance the student experience for generations to come.
"We're thrilled to have you on campus to celebrate the vibrant spirit of our Seahawk community, a spirit that is rooted in resilience, collaboration, compassion and fun," said Dr. Christine Reed Davis, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, speaking with the UNCW Parents Council members. "This is a time for us all to come together as a family - one that supports, uplifts and encourages each other."
With enhancing the student experience as a top priority throughout Family Weekend and the journey of all Seahawks, the Parent Opportunity Fund was among a number of funds families were encouraged to support across campus. The fund is focused on programs and initiatives that enhance the student experience by broadening academic, social and professional opportunities. Themes for the fund for 2024-25 academic year include career readiness, academic partnerships, student leadership development, campus spirit and traditions, health and wellbeing, and access and belonging.
"The council fosters communication, collaboration and a sense of community between parents and the university," said Dawn Russell '92, '22P, Development Officer for Parent Giving, and former Parents Council member. "As parents we bring unique insights and support that help UNCW create a thriving environment for all students - we can make a direct impact on student experiences."
Highlighting the significance and impact of the Parents Council, Vice Chancellor Eddie Stuart '05M shared that 60 percent of the university's operating budget comes from tuition and state appropriation, with the remaining 40 percent coming from endowment distribution and private giving - highlighting that of $136 million raised during the Like No Other campaign, 1,680 parents collectively contributed over $1 million to support students, faculty, programs and facilities.
The Parents Council is a network open to all UNCW parents who make an annual gift of $1,000 to the Parent Opportunity Fund, or any fund on campus. It is a giving society of dedicated parents who are actively involved in activities to promote the university, enrich the student experience, foster student career opportunities, support the university's financial needs and cultivate a positive experience for parents and students alike.
Parents are encouraged to join the Parents Council and learn more about how they can make an impact at uncw.edu/parentscouncil. For questions or additional information, please reach out to giving@uncw.edu.
Additionally, parents are encouraged to join the Seahawk Family Hub for access to important campus news and deadlines, timely announcements and to connect with fellow Seahawk parents and supporters.
