For Bella Curtin ’27, receiving the Stedman English Gage Distinguished Merit Scholarship was more than just financial support — it was a source of motivation and a call to pay it forward.

Curtin, who is pursuing a degree in Clinical Research, reflects on the generosity that made her college journey a little easier. “Receiving this scholarship has been an incredible honor,” she said. “It has allowed me to focus more on my studies without the added financial stress, and it’s given me the freedom to pursue research opportunities and extracurricular activities that are shaping my future.”

Curtin’s journey at UNCW has been one marked by hard work, dedication, and a deep desire to make a difference. In addition to excelling in her coursework, she’s actively involved in several campus organizations — including Habitat for Humanity, the Rain Garden Maintenance Club, and Reformed University Fellowship. Balancing a rigorous academic schedule with her extracurricular commitments, Curtin maintains a remarkable 3.9 GPA and works part-time.

This focus on both academic excellence and community engagement is central to Curtin’s growth during her time at UNCW. “Through meaningful connections and hands-on experiences, I’ve gained confidence and a deeper understanding of both my major and myself,” she explains. Her ultimate goal is to work in the clinical research field, contributing to the development of safe and effective medical treatments. “I want to play a role in advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes,” says Curtin.

The Stedman English Gage Distinguished Merit Scholarship, established by Hannah and William Gage in memory of their son, Stedman, has provided Bella with the support she needs to continue on this path. “The Gage family’s generosity is helping to ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus on what truly matters — my education,” Curtin says. “Their investment in students like me is inspiring, and I hope to give back one day, just as they have.”

To prospective donors, “Your generosity not only changes lives but also strengthens the Seahawk community — empowering students to succeed and give back in meaningful ways,” says Curtin.
