For Dylan Thompson ’26, a Wilmington native, choosing to attend UNCW was a natural decision. It offered the perfect balance of staying close to friends and family while immersing himself in a top-tier communication learning environment. Being a Seahawk, to him, is about embracing leadership opportunities, forging meaningful connections, and thriving within the beautiful campus culture. “Being a Seahawk means being a part of a welcoming community,” Thompson shares with pride.
Thompson is pursuing a degree in communication studies with a minor in leadership and is the recipient of the Lily Family Foundation Scholarship. Reflecting on the moment he learned about receiving the scholarship, he recalls feeling a mix of excitement and gratitude.
“I am extremely grateful for this support and feel immensely proud to receive it,” Thompson shared.
The Lily Family Foundation Scholarship in Communication Studies was established in 2021 by Damon Lilly ’15, a COM Studies graduate who recognized the impact that scholarships made on his life.
Thompson’s scholarship has allowed him to invest more deeply in his academic and personal growth. From honing his communication and media skills to working on student-led productions for both himself and the school, the scholarship has unlocked opportunities that may not have been possible otherwise.
“Thanks to this scholarship, I feel a burden has been lifted,” Thompson reflects. “I can now dedicate more effort to my studies and involvement in the UNCW community.”
Thompson’s passion for communication and media has been fueled by his active involvement on campus. As a member of TealTV, specifically the Seahawk Central Sports segment, he has been able to delve into sports media, journalism, and reporting — fields he hopes to pursue after graduation. Beyond academics, he also finds time to give back — regularly volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. This spirit of giving is something he carries forward, recognizing the importance of philanthropy in shaping his own journey.
“Receiving from others instills a mindset of reciprocity,” Thompson observes. “It fosters a positive attitude towards the community, enabling individuals to contribute meaningfully and support others in pursuing their aspirations.”
Thompson is excited for the path ahead, as he aspires to become a sports analyst. With the confidence he has gained, the skills he has cultivated, and the support he has received, there’s no doubt that Thompson is well on his way to soaring as a Seahawk and beyond.
To prospective donors, “You are not just making a donation,” says Thompson. “You are making a change and allowing future leaders of the world to seek better access and opportunities to their goals.”
