When I was looking for the next step in my career, I was thankful I didn’t need to leave Wilmington. UNCW offered the perfect blend of academic support, creativity and community, all within reach. As a nontraditional student with a lifelong love of learning, I found a degree program that matched my interests and allowed me to grow without having to put the rest of my life on hold.
One thing I’ve never done is blend in. I’ve always embraced my individuality, and UNCW encouraged me to bring that energy into the classroom. Through the Watson College of Education’s Master of Arts in Teaching program, I had the chance to work directly with students during my internship at Wilmington Early College High School. That hands-on experience confirmed what I already suspected: I love teaching. I love helping students see the power of words, language and expression — and maybe even have a little fun along the way.
My classes at UNCW didn’t just teach theory. They were interactive, engaging and filled with supportive faculty who helped me connect the dots between what I was learning and how I wanted to lead a classroom. Watson gave me the confidence to teach my way — mixing in art, humor and heart.
Outside of my graduate studies, I had the chance to share that creativity with students through my role as an English Language Arts and Writing Teacher with UNCW’s Upward Bound Math & Science Program. From day one, I aimed to make each class feel like an experience. I believe education doesn’t have to be dry — and based on how many students lose track of time in my sessions, I think I’m onto something!
I’ve always found joy in helping others, and UNCW made it possible for me to stay involved in service while working toward my degree.
I’m the founder of Greeting Card Joy, where I design handmade cards and centerpieces that I’ve donated over the years to seniors, churches and local organizations. I also started 1Byte Computer Literacy, Inc., a nonprofit that teaches senior citizens how to use digital tools to share their stories, run online businesses and stay connected. Education takes many forms — and I’m grateful I’ve been able to bring joy into every version of it.
Receiving several scholarships through UNCW was a true gift. It relieved the financial burden and allowed me to fully focus on teaching, learning and creating. Attending the scholarship dinner and meeting donors, including those who support the Hines Hollis Scholarship, reminded me how deeply generosity can impact a student’s life.
UNCW was the right place for me. I was able to grow professionally, embrace my creative spirit and pursue a career I love while staying close to home and serving the community I care about. To the donors who make these opportunities possible: you didn’t just support my education — you fueled my future.
