As an active-duty Navy veteran, drilling Navy reservist, and United States Marine Corps (USMC) spouse, Susan Chronister ’25 knows the meaning of dedication and sacrifice. Her 20 years of combined military service have instilled in her a profound sense of duty, not only to her country but also to her personal growth and future aspirations.
Returning to academia to pursue a Master of Science in Accountancy at UNCW’s Cameron School of Business (CSB), Chronister’s journey is one of resilience.
Chronister is the recipient of the Joseph Chadwick Koon Fellowship in Accounting, which has been instrumental in helping her balance the demands of her household, coursework, and daily commute from Jacksonville, NC. Established in memory of Joseph “Chad” Koon ’17M — a graduate of the UNCW Masters in Accountancy Program who unexpectedly passed away in 2018 — the fellowship assists students pursuing a Masters of Accountancy.
Reflecting on when she first learned about her scholarship, Chronister shared that knowing the award was in memory of Chad Koon made an impact on her and inspired her to honor him by succeeding in her educational journey at UNCW.
“The scholarship is more than just being about financial aid, it’s a testament to the values of dedication and excellence that I stive to embody,” said Chronister. "I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and to honoring the legacy, generosity, and support that this award represents.”
As Chronister prepares to retire from the Navy Reserve force in December 2025, after 20 years of service, she looks forward to her next chapter with optimism. After graduation, she is excited to contribute to her community and profession and hopes to work as an audit associate for a public accounting firm in Virginia.
Chronister is also appreciative of the opportunity to build friendships and a professional network during her time at UNCW. “After attending all online courses for the MSA Bootcamp 2024 summer semester, it was very refreshing to meet my peers and professors in person at the UNCW MAS Charolette trip,” she shared. “I am glad that our small group of boot campers built the bonds we did. Their support has been a major factor in my success.”
To prospective donors, “Scholarships not only provide financial assistance but empower students to achieve their academic and personal goals. By supporting UNCW students, you are investing in the future,” says Chronister.
