Blackbaud Security Incident

UNC Wilmington was notified of a ransomware attack on Blackbaud, a private, highly regarded company that provides cloud-based service platforms to assist colleges, universities and nonprofits. Blackbaud’s constituent relationship management services are employed by UNCW’s Division for University Advancement and many UNC System institutions, as well as other nonprofit foundations and organizations around the world.

According to Blackbaud, the cybercriminal did not access credit card information or bank account information. In this data security incident, information that may have been readable includes names, physical addresses, history of gifts made to UNCW, phone numbers and email addresses. This incident pertains only to information stored by the Division for University Advancement, to include alumni, student, parent and employee records. Similar information maintained by other campus offices was not affected. The University has been assured by Blackbaud that they have taken every reasonable action to ensure data was not misused or disseminated and will not be in the future.

According to Blackbaud, there is no indication at this time that this incident would create any vulnerability for you; however, we regret that it occurred and, out of an abundance of caution, wanted to make you aware. We will continue to work with Blackbaud to confirm they take the necessary steps to minimize any impact. We take the protection of your information very seriously and encourage you to remain vigilant, as always, to the threat of identity theft.
